Holly Evergreen Holly Evergreen had always taken pride in her work as the Grotto’s Events Manager, but by December 1996 her role had become increasingly unstable. Harry Winterford’s long list of complaints from parents, staff, and even corporate, had fallen squarely on her shoulders. The day before the murder, a particularly serious complaint was forwarded to management, and corporate demanded action. Dean Kringle, the Shopping Centre Manager, asked to meet with her first thing on the morning of Harry’s death to discuss Harry’s behaviour and her inability to manage him. Holly was well aware of how precarious her situation had become. Dean had already warned her that if she couldn’t get Harry under control, her job would be at risk. And with her contract terms, if she were dismissed, her wages could legally be withheld during the review process, a devastating blow for someone already struggling. Among the evidence was an eviction notice containing Holly's address showing she was to be evicted if she didn't make a payment. Losing her pay would almost certainly lead to her being removed from her home. On the morning of the murder, Holly claimed to have spent the crucial window in the food court having breakfast. But this alibi quickly fell apart. Both Frankie and Flora Nightshade, as well as Sally Wreath from the shop opposite the Grotto, confirmed that the food court had been temporarily closed that morning following an incident where a child was sick near the seating area. No staff or customers were allowed inside, so this was a lie. This inconsistency, paired with her mounting financial desperation, her direct stake in Harry’s employment troubles, and her opportunity during the chaos of the morning, made Holly’s involvement unavoidable. With Harry refusing to cooperate, continuing to cause complaints, and threatening the job she depended on, Holly acted out of fear and frustration. The truth ultimately reveals that she confronted Harry during that window, and in a moment of panic and anger, struck him with the snow globe. Holly Evergreen, overwhelmed by pressure and terrified of losing everything, was the true killer.

Noel Frost Noel Frost, 22, is a newly hired Elf Performer at Merryvale Shopping Centre. Eager, enthusiastic, and desperate to prove himself, Noel sees the grotto job as his first “big break” into performing. Unfortunately, he works directly under Harry - the returning Santa - whose demanding attitude and short temper made Noel’s experience far from magical. Noel quickly became a person of interest to police. His tense relationship with Harry was well-known. Harry had written a harsh, belittling note on Noel’s script after Noel attempted to improvise lines during a rehearsal. There were also printed emails between two unidentified people (later confirmed to be Noel and Holly, the Events Manager) in which they both complained about Harry’s behaviour, showing that Noel felt threatened and intimidated by him. Additionally, Noel was absent from the 9:15am carol performance on the morning of the murder. Despite this, Noel’s alibi was solid. At the time of the murder, Noel was leaving a voicemail for his boyfriend, explaining how frightened Harry had made him feel that morning. In the background of the recording, “Carol of the Bells” - the elves’ 9:25am performance - can be clearly heard. The cheer of the audience at the end of the song occurs just before Noel ends the message, placing the voicemail closer to 9:30am. Since Harry was killed between 9:25 and 9:30, Noel could not have committed the murder.

Crispin Clarke Crispin Clarke had been feuding with Harry Winterford for years. Their disputes were well known, stretching back through multiple Christmas seasons, and stemmed from repeated incidents at the Merryvale Shopping Centre. The tension was particularly personal for Crispin, as Harry had been cruel to his daughter, refusing to let her visit the grotto after she patiently queued, leaving her upset and disappointed. On the morning of the murder, Crispin confronted Harry, and their argument became heated. Holly Evergreen, the Events Manager, was called over to intervene, and Harry stormed off toward the grotto, leaving Crispin to continue his Christmas shopping. Further actions, including a complaint email Crispin sent to the shopping centre manager and a threatening Christmas card, added to his suspicious behaviour. Despite this, Crispin was not the killer. His alibi is verified: a time-stamped receipt from PopFizz Toys confirms he was making a purchase at the exact time of the murder. While Crispin had motive and a long-standing feud with the victim, the evidence clearly shows he was elsewhere when the crime occurred.

Evelyn Winterford Evelyn Winterford may have appeared to be a strong suspect during the investigation. She and Harry were overheard arguing in the early hours of 20th December, and CCTV later captured the argument continuing in their car upon arrival at Merryvale Shopping Centre. However, what seemed like hostility was actually fear and frustration. The night before, Evelyn had discovered a letter from the hospital detailing Harry’s worsening heart condition. Already worried about his declining health, she confronted him about continuing to work at the grotto. Harry, too proud and too attached to the role he had held for over a decade, refused to step down. Their argument carried from the house to the car, not out of malice, but out of Evelyn’s desperate attempt to make him see that his health could no longer be ignored. When they arrived at Merryvale, Evelyn went directly to Shopping Centre Manager Dean Cringle at 9:05 AM, pleading with him to relieve Harry of his duties. She explained her concerns, but Dean was powerless to act; Harry’s unique “until he steps down” contract made it impossible to remove him without major consequences. Evelyn remained in Dean’s office until around 9:30–9:35 AM, placing her securely away from the grotto at the time of the murder. Her alibi is consistent and confirmed by Dean’s statement, as well as the visitors’ log she signed, which is documented in the NCID’s emails. Although her distress and earlier arguments with Harry may have cast suspicion on her, Evelyn Winterford was not involved in his death. Her actions on the morning of the murder were motivated solely by concern for her husband’s wellbeing, not by intent to harm.

Frankie and Flora Nightshade Frankie and Flora Nightshade, 15-year-old twins with a history of trouble at Merryvale Shopping Centre, quickly became suspects after reports of two teenagers running from the grotto around the time of the murder. The twins were already banned from the shopping centre for attempting to steal alcohol, which immediately raised concern about why they were there at all. Suspicion grew when a VHS Vault membership card was found inside the grotto. At first, this appeared to be key evidence showing its owner had been at the scene. Further investigation later confirmed through a VHS Vault membership log that the card belonged to Frankie Nightshade, placing him inside the grotto that morning. Inside the grotto, police also found a footprint in the artificial snow next to a broken bauble. During her interview, Flora admitted she had accidentally stepped on something that smashed while they were hiding, strongly suggesting the footprint was hers. The twins explained they went to the grotto after the food court was closed due to a child being sick - a detail supported by staff member Sally Wreath. Both interviews showed that the twins struggle around Christmas following their parents’ separation, which helped explain their dislike of the festive season. While they were present in the grotto, their plan was not to hurt anyone but to play a prank on Santa. After the bauble broke, they hid to avoid being caught. While hiding, they heard a loud thud but didn’t understand what it meant at the time. As the curtains were about to open, Frankie and Flora panicked and ran, later seen leaving the area by Sarah Mistle. Although their behaviour appeared suspicious, the evidence shows they were hiding at the time Harry Winterford was killed.
